Walk across the Bridge, stop for a moment, and feel the freshness that the winds bring down from the Prenj Mountain into the valley,
through which the Neretva flows. You’ll wish to walk along its riversides, hugged by walkways, for hours.
The most beautiful ornament of the emerald beauty Neretva
The Old Stone Bridge is a stone bridge ornamenting the old city of Konjic over the everlasting Neretva River. It represents a magnificent example of Ottoman bridge architecture in the Balkans and is listed as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was originally built in 1682 by Ali-aga Hasečić and officially opened in 1683.
Unfortunately, the Old Stone Bridge was demolished on March 3, 1945, during the withdrawal of the German army, after which a wooden structure stood for a long time, and served for crossing from one to another coast of the Neretva River. In 1962, the bridge got a new look due to the replacement of the wooden structure with a concrete one.
It was rebuilt to its original state and re-opened on June 16, 2009, with the help of the Government of the Republic of Turkey. Precisely made stone blocks ornament the lower parts of the bridge, which resist all adversities with their strength, while the upper part is decorated with tuff, which is processed in a way that ensures the harmony and beauty of this building.
Walk across the Bridge, stop for a moment, and feel the freshness that the winds bring down from the Prenj Mountain into the valley, through which the Neretva flows. You’ll wish to walk along its riversides, hugged by walkways, for hours. For Old Stone Bridge it is said that represents the ”and”, a place where Bosnia meets Herzegovina. Today, it represents a symbol of the city of Konjic and an important part of the development of tourism in this beautiful Herzegovinian city.
