The centuries-old tradition of Konjic
The art of woodcarving is a centuries-old tradition in the city of Konjic, which has reached world recognition.
Among the numerous families from the area of the town of Konjic, who were engaged in the woodcarving craft, two families stand out, Nikšić and Mulić, who made it world famous and passed down tradition from generation to generation.
The Woodcarving Museum was founded with the aim of preserving the tradition of woodcarving, as well as the memory of the development of this craft through different epochs and all those generations of craftsmen who with their hard work and effort passed their knowledge and skills to their successors.
Traditional woodcarving from Konjic, as one of the most important elements of the cultural and historical heritage of humanity, was included in the UNESCO list of intangible heritage in December 2017, and a significant number of works of Konjic’s woodcarving are on the list of national monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The museum provides an opportunity to get to know the life and work of Konjic’s woodcarvers, the tools and techniques they have used and are using, and the ability of this craft to survive several wars and prove that it is worth preserving.
